The Headwaters' Concert Choir is conducted by Shelagh Tyreman, B. Mus. Perf. (Honours), Dip. Mus. Perf. (Honours), Dip. Op. Perf., and
Robert Hennig, B. Mus., Post Graduate Diploma (Honours).
Headwaters' Concert Choir tours, along with their musical friends, under the umbrella of Great Lakes' Touring Chorus. The choir is one of Canada’s finest community choirs, and has won awards for its interpretations of Handel’s “Messiah” , Faure’s “Requiem”, Rutter’s “Requiem”, Saint-Saens “Christmas Oratorio”, Orffs’ “Carmina Burana”, and Beethoven’s “9th Symphony”. The blended and expressive sound has been the choir's trademark for over 10 years. Performing both sacred and secular repertoire, choir members are committed to offering audiences authentic interpretation, clarity of expression and a profound emotional experience of some of the most beautiful music ever composed. Concerts are uplifting celebrations of the triumphs, great and small, of the most creative composers.
The chorus has been invited to perform in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and sanctuaries.
In the summer of 2009 the choir traveled to Austria to perform at Esterhazy Palace, as a result of an invitation to appear at the Haydn Choral Music Festival. The choir presented concert repertoire in the acoustically perfect Haydn Hall and in the awe-inspiring Melk Abbey. From there they performed in the Marble Hall in the Mirabelle Palace in Salzburg and completed their concert tour in Prague, Czech Republic, with a joint choral performance with a famous Prague choir- Iventus.
In March of 2010 the chorus was invited to sing at the 65th Anniversary of the Liberation of France by the Allies. The Chorus represented Canada in a choral series that featured Canada, England and the USA. A full concert was presented in the Eglise de la Madeleine, as well as being musical guests of France’s national cathedral – Notre Dame de Paris. The choir presented Canadian as well as European music from the high altar at Notre Dame.
In March of 2012 the choir was invited to sing in Italy. The choir performed in the Basilica Of St. Peter, Vatican City, and at the Palestrina Cathedral in the Frascati region close to Rome. The showcase was shared with other international choirs from Japan and Italy.
In 2014, Great Lakes' Touring Chorus performed a concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York, as well as singing at Carnegie Hall.
In 2016, we were thrilled to present a concert at St. Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, as part of an incredible tour of Scotland.
In July of 2018, the choir performed in Cardiff, Wales, with the Cardiff Arms Park Male Chorus, and is Beaumaris, Wales, with regional choirs, at the invitation of the BBC.
Maestro Robert Hennig BMus. P.G. Diploma (Honours) graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree (University of Calgary) and a post-graduate Diploma in Music with Honours (University of Toronto). Studies have taken him to a scholarship appointment for the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. He has won the Toronto Kopaz Foundation award and the Canadian Opera Women's Society award for excellence in music. He has attended the Banff School of Fine Arts, and completed advanced choral studies with Canadian choral icon Elmer Iseler. As a keyboard specialist, he studied with Catherine Palmer (Healey Willan's protege) at Yorkminster Park Baptist in Toronto, and Terrance Fullerton of the Calgary Philharmonic. Mr Hennig has also been a policy member for the worship and the arts subcommittee for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada and a pilot program developer for Music at the Dufferin Board of Education. He is the conductor of many community choirs and orchestras, including Brampton Festival Singers and Headwaters' Concert Choir, and has been honoured to have directed concerts at the Rose Theatre, Brampton, Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, Haydn Hall in Vienna, the Marble Hall in the Mirabelle Palace in Salzburg, Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy.
Maestra Shelagh Tyreman is a graduate of Mount Royal University and the University of Toronto Music Performance degrees. She was on the Dean's list at both institutions, and also graduated from the University of Toronto Opera Division. Shelagh was a scholarship student at both the Banff School of Fine Arts and the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, England. Shelagh is also the Conductor of Headwaters' Concert Choir, and is the Music Director/Organist for St, Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Brampton, where she conducts the Senior Choir, Leap of Faith Band, and Junior Music Makers. Shelagh was delighted to conduct her adult choir in concerts at Lincoln Cathedral, St. Alban's Cathedral. and Watford, England. As a soloist, Shelagh won the vocal prize of the CBC Competition for Young Performers, the Canadian Opera Women's Society Prize, and the Wagner Society Prize. Roles she has sung include Mozart's "Countess", Britten's "Queen Elizabeth I", "Lia" in Debussy's "L'enfant Prodigue" and Menotti's "Mother" in "Amahl and the Night Visitors". Oratorios as a soloist include Handel's "Messiah", Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Faure's "Requiem", Mozart's "Requiem", Verdi's "Requiem", Vivaldi's "Gloria", and Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Shelagh also enjoys performing in musical theatre. Roles include leads in Stephen Sondheim's "Follies", "Into the Woods" and "Company", as well as Cole Porter's "Anything Goes."
